Who Invented the Contact Lens?

Many believe that the lens is a relatively new invention and was conceived in this century through technology and innovation. While contacts have been developed by now not so long ago that the foundation and inspiration began many centuries ago.

That probably comes as quite a shock to many, but the idea of contact lenses began with Leonardo da Vinci. In the 16th Century, Leonardo da Vinci sketches a variety of ways and include descriptionsof them. Then, after over 100 years ago, Rene Descartes developed the idea of a corneal lens to correct visual problems. Thomas Young used Descartes idea 170 years later, developed and tested, what the first lens. However, it was in 1887 that a German glassblower a contact lens, which was designed to be worn and would develop acceptable to the eye. Then the world began the quest to develop and improve the design.

In the 1900s, a US-AmericanOpticians produced the first lens in this country and led to contact lenses made of plastic. That was a big step, and was a step away from glass contacts. The contact industry and technology continue to expand and grow, and in the 1960s, Otto Wichterle and Lim Drahoslav created a soft contact lens with a water-absorbing plastic. This development is what it most, the majority of soft contacts inspired today. The 1970s found this lens to patients in the United Statesand the toric contact lens for patients with astigmatism.

The 1980s continued to see improvements and new options to bear in touch. Soft colored contact lenses and full-day was for the general public. It was also RGP lenses are available in these styles. Bifocal lenses their way onto the market. And fortunately for all carrier lens, was the first multipurpose lens care solution available. The 1990scontinue to show an improvement at all innovations from the 80s and other options were available for contact lens wearers.

As you can see, there was no one inventor of the contact lens, but the cooperation over many centuries and many people develop new ideas and implementing them.

How Contact Lenses Were Invented

When it comes to vision, the history is full of visionaries. Many people think contact lenses are an invention of the 20th Century. In fact, people have tried to find a way to ditch the glasses for centuries. Leonardo da Vinci had the idea in 1500. Since it with so many of his ideas, he made sketches of corrective lenses that would fit directly over the eye of a person.

More than 130 years later, in the 1600s, Rene Descartes wrote a book with the title in Dioptricwhich he outlined his idea for a corneal contact lenses. Later in the century, Philippe de La Hire some drawings of concave lenses on the eye.

However, it was made until 1801, that someone actually these ideas into practice. Working from the writings of Descartes, 28-year-old British doctor and all-round genius of Thomas Young created the first of the cornea, lens and tried it in his own eye.

In the late 1800s, a German glassblower creates the first glass contact lens. He watched them with German soldiers during World War II, as Nazi soldiers not allowed to wear glasses. After the war, the demand for contact lenses throughout the world. Plastic is the new material of choice rather than glass.

From the postwar period, contact the development really took off. Hard lenses have been sold commercially in the early 1940s. In the early 1970s, the first soft contact lenses> Lenses were put on the market by Bausch & Lomb.

For the next 30 years, there was an explosion in the popularity of contact lenses. Today we can buy disposable contact lenses, colored contact lenses, and lenses with UV filters in them. It remains to be seen what developments in contact lenses and vision correction in the 21 Century experience. Are we going to throw away all our objectives for the benefit of laser eye surgery a day? If somethingdeveloped quite differently in order to improve vision? Perhaps there is a modern Leonardo da Vinci sketched his ideas for a new way of seeing.
